It Begins !!!

The day started with slowly walking around town, found a $5 copy of Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son (NZ Vinyl Press) in a box full of crap at a odd second hand store. Carried on via Regional Wines and Spirits, and filled up a Growler with Tuatara NZAPA and Terry grabbed a few interesting bits and pieces.

We then headed to Newtown and went record digging at Death Ray Records.

A David Hasselhoff record may have been purchased by a member of the party… It may have even been played later.. “Go Away Little Girl” definitely comes across as dodgy!

I picked up a nice clean copy of Piece Of Mind (NZ Vinyl Press) to replace my copy which was scratched in The Trooper.

It then all started at 16:55 on Saturday the 18th of October with Piece of Mind seeing I had just got the new copy what better way to start!

This glorious moment was delayed slightly as I knocked the needle sending it skidding to the middle of Where Eagles Dare.

So we reset and started properly this time.

With a Cornish Orchards Farmhouse Cider in hand and good music blasting on the stereo.

Terry - “Nicks LP player had a hiccup during “Die With Your Boots On” which gave him quite a scare. Raising the prospects of owning two LPs of ‘Piece of Mind” both with faults on the same track! Luckily turned out to be an inexplicable random bit of dirt. Eddie trying to scare us or something!”

This was followed by a NZ copy of Maiden Japan with the extra track of Wrathchild. This was listened to with the Tuatara NZAPA (Aotearoa Pale Ale).

Terry - “Maiden Japan. Great to listen to this rarity. Has this even been released on CD?”

While still drinking the Aotearoa Pale Ale we also listened to a picture disk of Running Free and a 12” single of Wasted Years.

Next up was Somewhere In Time and the St Bernardus Tripel.

Terry - “Then the “Somewhere in time” album. Doesn’t get out much this album - not many of these songs ever make the best ofs - but I like it quite a lot. Tried to explain my alternative “Eating some cake” lyrics to “Heaven can wait” and “The lonely nest of the long distance plumber”. Things were getting a tad silly at this stage as we drank the Trippel!”

While still on the tripel (it’s a very tasty but a very big beer!) we listened to the picture disk of Stranger In A Strange Land.

Terry - “The 1986 B-Sides - to ‘Wasted Years’ and ‘Stranger in a strange land’ - Reach Out, Juanita, That Girl - very “poppy”. Not quite Iron Maiden as we thought we knew them! I do quite like them, is interesting to see what an experimental period Iron Maiden was going through at the time. Am glad that they didn’t continue down this route though, a mid 80s “Turbo” like album would have shredded their cred The classic “Sheriff of Uddersfield” was a great laugh of course.!”

The last album of the evening was matched up with two beers as it was the 100.08 minute runtime (according to the back sleeve) double LP of Live After Death!

Side 1 and 2 were listened to with Hanssens Artisanaal Oude Gueuze a fantastic sour beer and side 3 and 4 were enjoyed with Schöfferhofer Hefeweizen.

Terry - “What more can be said about “Live after Death” AWESOME! Luckily we have still got multiple formats left to enjoy this on! Was a bit of a concern at first as previous owners had thrashed the hell out of the LP [for obvious reasons!!!] but the sound quality was actually well-nigh perfect, just a bit of popping during the quiet parts of ‘Rime of the Ancient Mariner”
