Session 10 - 27/08/2016

A lot has happened since this session. The session was borne out of the fact I needed to move due to landlord issues and we hadn’t had an uptheiro.nz post Melbourne.

It has been two years today since the first post on the site.

I had been building a nice little collection of Chimay Blue, so instead of moving these I thought it best we consume them. The Complete Albums Collection 1980-1988 seemed like the perfect match. This was shaping up to be the perfect farewell to the flat where Listen-a-Ron was formed over a night of Japanese metal on the 7/6/2014.

The first seven Studio albums and the first live album matched with fantastic beer - what could go wrong? We also have a growing pile of aftermath albums and singles, so we picked Urchin to follow.

I own a Chimay chalice and between us both Terry and I have several chalices. The beer of the day was Chimay so it made sense to get a second Chimay chalice.

Terry brought a Chimay gift box which came with a chalice and 330 ml bottles of the Red, White and a 2015 Blue.

I won’t write any details about the albums just notes about the re-presses.

Todays Line Up

Iron Maiden

2:45 P.M. Chimay Red
This re-press was sounding good and I noted that the bass frequencies seem to have been boosted. I had only listened to a few of the re-presses as I normally just listen to the originals so the majority were still sealed. Around this time I decided to open each LP as the previous album was ending.

3:05 P.M. Side 2
A good enjoyable beer.

Red Maiden

Killers

3:26 P.M. Side 1 with the Chimay White
I failed to open this album in advance, maybe I will remember to open the next album.
3:45 P.M. Side 2

White Killers

Number of the Beast

I remembered to open this album beforehand.
4:07 P.M. Side 1 - 2010 Chimay Blue 750 ml, Opened with a loud pop. Tasted amazing, slight oxidation but not distracting.

Anck Su Namun (Su), my cat decided around this time to start following both Terry and I to the kitchen whenever we went near it demanding food.

4:29 P.M. Side 2
We opened some cheese which went nicely with the Chimay Blue.
I opened Piece of Mind ahead of time as well.

2010 Chimay Blue

Piece of Mind

4:51 P.M. Side 1 2011 Chimay Blue 330 ml

5:15 P.M. Side 2
Vicky, my parter has mentioned her frustration at the song Quest For fire and largely the opening lyrics “In a time when dinosaurs walked the earth”. The contention comes about as dinosaurs and people were not populating the earth in the same time periods.
Terry proposed a solution. There appears to be no mention of people in the song (apart from “Discovery of man”). Could the song be about intelligent dinosaurs?

By this time, Su had decided Terry was the warmest person in the room so sat on him. This started to interfere with the rants and leaning forward pick up the glass.

2011 Chimay Blue

Powerslave

5:35 P.M. Side 1. The time may be off, the way I have written it looks more like I had no idea when we started Side 1.
5:45 P.M. 2014 Chimay Blue 750 ml. Around this time I stated ranting about the re-press covers. A number of the new press covers look blurry. They have increased the colour brightness but they have lost details in doing so. This is especially obvious when you look and an original next to the re-press.
6:07 P.M. Side 2. This was interrupted by a phone call. Don’t people know we are busy?

I located the pet-heating pad and Su abandoned Terry for this. Onwards with the Albums.

Live After Death

6:36 P.M. Side 1
The 2014 Chimay Blue was tasting good but had less complexity than the 2010 or 2011. The Blue really does improve with age.

7:00 P.M. Side 2
7:13 P.M. 2015 Chimay Blue 750 ml. There is a large OMG on my notes at this point “Caught glass as it was exiting the table. Clean up was required. Most beer saved.”

7:30 P.M. Side 3. We started talking about how many copies we own of this album as this was the third time it has been played at an uptheiro.nz. I believe I own three on LP, one on cassette and a copy on CD.
Terry - “In comparison Terry has a mere three copies, LP, CD & the DVD set… So thats 8 copies between the two of us!”

7:56 P.M. Side 4. Terry thinks side 4 is Hammersmith, and it is.

Terry - “After over 5 hours of Chimay tasting we were getting quite merry. I remember at one point Nick saying something like “No, I am not going to write that down! we do not need a permanent record of that conversation!” but I can’t remember what we were actually talking about at the time!!!!”

2015 Chimay Blue

Somewhere in Time

8:25 P.M. Side 1
We had some more substantial food than cheese and crackers at this point.
8:36 P.M. 2015 Chimay Blue 330 ml.
8:51 P.M. Side 2. This repress has a very odd tape warble during The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner. I had been talking about this for a while indeed probably ranting about it beforehand. Terry completely missed it.

2015 Chimay Blue

Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son

9:20 P.M. Side 1
9:27 P.M. 2010 Chimay Blue 330 ml. This was tasting amazing, having an older bottle following a newer bottle shows up again how well they age.

10:05 P.M. Called.

The Aftermath

Urchin - Get Up And Get Out

I either took no notes for the aftermath or I lost them in the move.
We followed the fantastic run of albums with Urchin - Get Up And Get Out.

This is a compilation released by High Roller Records in 2012 of material originally recorded in the 70’s and it contains the entire recorded career of Urchin.

Both Adrian Smith and Dave Murray are on this album, it is good later 70’s rock.

Terry - “The tracks with both of those two on it were the best ones but it was all very enjoyable.”

We followed the fantastic run of beers with a 2015 Liefmans - Kriek Brut.

Both a great way to finish out the day.
